Bakersfield water bills are going up.
The city council approved a five year rate hike Wednesday night.
Over five years, rates will rise by about 51%, with the first hike being 34%.
The increase comes primarily due to water treatment costs.
The city says rates will still be lower than most providers.
The increase goes into effect July 1.
